Change WRDSB Secondary Start Time to 9:05

Teenagers need a minimum of 9 1/2 of sleep every night, but due early start times, WRDSB students are unable to get adequate sleep. Research has shown that early start times are detrimental to a teenager's developing brain. Lack of sleep inhibits students from retaining their learning, negatively affects their focus and ability to cope with stress. Additionally, lack of sleep increases the risk of mental health problems in students. We students understand that these early start times save the Board 1 million dollars per year, but the Board spends millions more on our education per year. Students are no able to get the most out of their education when they are deprived of sleep, so we believe that it would be in the boards best interest to make the secondary start time 9:05. Adolescent sleep deprivation is largely driven by a conflict between teens’ internal biological clocks and the schedules and demands of society, and it is time we change that.

"Given that the primary focus of education is to maximize human potential, then a new task before us is to ensure that the conditions in which learning takes place address the very biology of our learners."        - Mary A.
