Robert Goodrich started this petition to Waterbury Community Members

On February 21, 2019, Waterbury Board of Education Commissioner Tom Van Stone  (R) recommended eliminating the federal holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for our schools because students have chosen to sit during the Pledge of Allegiance. This exhibited a large degree of racial insensitivity and complete disregard for students’ rights protected under the Constitution.

Van Stone started his nearly three-minute political stunt by quoting the Negro National Anthem.  This type of divisive and racially charged tactic is deeply disturbing.  Commissioner Van Stone chose to isolate Waterbury’s African American community by specifically calling for the elimination of a federal holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a civil rights icon.  This further marginalized and isolated African American students, families, and community members.

As a community, we reject Commissioner Van Stone’s extreme ideologies, his cultural and racial insensitivities, and call into to question his fitness to continue to serve our community on the board of education.  This petition calls for:

*Commissioner Tom Van Stone step down from being the chair of the curriculum committee.

*Commissioner Tom Van Stone use his own resources to attend anti-bias and uncovering racism training.

*If Commissioner Van Stone refuses to step down then we are calling for the President of the Board of Education Liz Brown to replace him, as it is her sole responsibility to appoint committee chairs.

This petition has been created because no one person, not a single organization, a government body, or elected official has acted in a responsible manner to address Commissioner Tom Van Stone's formal recommendations to eliminate a federal holiday dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The community must speak together and we hope this petition becomes an amplifier of our collective voice.
