Nur Haziqah Binti Hasman started this petition to Water and Energy Consumers Association of Malaysia (WECAM)

Human greedy and inconsiderate attitudes are one of the main causes of the extinction of marine life. Uncontrolled pollution conditions such as oil spills in the sea and irresponsible human activities pollute the sea water by dumping garbage resulting in the death of aquatic life. Every day, millions of human-used plastics are dumped into landfills or drifted into the sea. According to the United Nations Environment Program, (UNEP), 50 percent of plastics are used only once and plastics are 10 percent of the waste generated.

One of the life below the water is turtles also face extinction. Although turtles are not killed or hunted but become victims as a result of hunting another sea inhabitant, namely stingrays. Illegal trawls are set up to catch stingrays. Most of these deaths were caused by fishermen using nets despite being banned by the government from catching stingrays. As a result, nets measuring 10 inches and above are banned.

In addition, the problem of ubiquitous plastic waste disposal, inadequate solid waste management and excessive use of plastic have made blueprint pollution increasingly critical. Unsurprisingly, when the mass media reported many marine life died as a result of choking on waste and one of its victims was a turtle.

Last but not least, the government itself must enforce the law and impose appropriate punishments and fines on people who take turtle eggs illegally as well as jointly protect the sea which is a turtle habitat from any pollution. Gazetting turtle spawning and breeding areas as protected areas is also one of the effective ways to preserve this unique species. Whatever measures are taken and enforced by the government and the authorities will not have an effect if the community does not cooperate. The community must work together to protect and appreciate the turtles in our country.
