Drop the frivolous charges against Anuja Rajendra

Anuja Rajendra, as a newcomer to electoral politics, ran in the Democratic primary for the 18th district of Michigan’s State Senate. She ran on a relatively progressive platform to represent women of color in Michigan’s legislature as a response to Trump’s racist platform. She based her campaign on being an outsider who wanted to change the way politics was done.
During the campaign she sent one mailer to her constituents that included a grammatical error. If interpreted in isolation of her other literature, that error could mean to someone who is unaware of local politics that she was an incumbent. Attached is the ACLU brief refuting such a claim.
Two supporters of one of her opponents filed complaints about that mailer with the Washtenaw County prosecuting attorney. The prosecuting attorney chose to investigate and then prosecute.
While we don’t know the motivations of the prosecuting attorney, we do know that such frivolous complaints have been filed in almost every election and he has been in his position since 1992. The only one to be prosecuted for such a complaint is a woman of color. This cannot be seen in isolation of the systemic bias against people of color and women in general. Prosecuting Anuja will send a chilling message to any outsider who wishes to be involved in politics.
Please sign our appeal to the prosecuting attorney to drop the charges against Ms. Rajendra.
The Honorable Brian Mackie,
We are citizens of Washtenaw County and Michigan appealing to you to drop the charges against Ms. Anuja Rajendra. Her opponents spoke out against the charges and you received letters of retraction from the two people who filed the initial complaints. Ms. Rajendra is one of very few candidates to ever be prosecuted for such frivolous yet common election complaints.
Provided the long history of law enforcement bias against people of color and the tremendous barriers of entry into politics for outsiders, we view this prosecution as another assault against people of color, women, and democracy.
We are asking you to stand on the right side of history and join the rest of us to further inclusion, tolerance and democracy.
