Police violence has been a problem in America for decades, and Washington state has had some of the most out of any state. According to mappingpoliceviolence.org, 250 people died from police violence in Washington state, making it the state with the 7th most deaths due to police violence. In Washington state, aspiring police officers are required to undergo only 720 hours of training before they can become certified. This is about half of a school year. Recently, Governor Jay Inslee signed 12 police reform bills into law, altering police training by putting an emphasis on nonviolent de-escalation techniques. Additionally, the bills banned the use of chokeholds and tear gas, and they added mental health into the Washington state police training curriculum. While these bills are long overdue for Washington state, nowhere in those bills does it say anything about extending this low training requirement. I believe that these new bills will lower police violence rates, however, I think that these rates can be further reduced if the required amount of police training is increased. By signing this petition, you are helping to reduce police violence rates in Washington state.
