Washington State legislators are working diligently to better define the relationships between employees & employers, and to define what it means to be an independent contractor. This is said to help regulate the purposeful misclassification of employees as independent contractors. However, as written, these bills have the potential to harm MANY people who are currently self-employed and operating their businesses legally in our state.

HB 1515, SB 5513, HB 1601, and SB 5690 introduce new independent contractor classification tests which make it harder to become self-employed and classified as an independent contractor for tax and benefit purposes - ex. Unemployment Insurance and Worker’s Comp.

This should be concerning to any small business owner but especially so for those working in a shared space or booth rental environment who, by the looks of it, may not meet all of the criteria to be classified as Independent Contractors because we lease space with/from professionals who perform jobs in the same business or trade we operate in. We’re talking beauty professionals, massage therapists, dental hygienists, ride share drivers, truck drivers, real estate agents, healthcare workers, forest protection agencies, general contractors, pet care service providers, physical therapists, etc
