Family Nursery Title Bolsters More Inclusive Use of the Space

Apr 9, 2015 — Hi Supporters! The bits of media coverage for this has been so exciting.

There has not yet been a formal press release from the Nationals depicting their plans, but as we wait to hear more concrete details from them and after being in touch with many thoughtful and supportive mothers, it occurred to me: A space which functions as outlined in our petition should really be titled something along the lines of "Family Nursery."

This title could help to ensure that the space is not only exclusive to breastfeeding mothers, but also to bottle-feeding parents (moms and dads,) pumping moms, diaper changing, and just general "my baby or tot needs a break from the crowds"!

Calling the room a Family Nursery could also help to alleviate concerns that some breastfeeding mothers who may choose to nurse at their seats, a picnic table, or wherever for that matter not feel pressured to go to a designated area; It is against the law (thankfully!) to ask a breastfeeding mom to cover up or move to another place. The idea of a Family Nursery is about giving parents and caregivers a choice and suitable alternatives to needing to find places here and there which may not be clean or comfortable to tend to their children.

Families around DC continue to thank you all for the continued support. Please keep sharing and be sure to provide your own experiences below so that the organization has an idea of the details that would benefit us all. Let's continue to spread the word!
