Change Washington State School Policies around Sexual Harrasment
Why this petition matters
I am writing to you today to address school policies around sexual harassment and rape. In many schools, no action can be taken until legal action has been taken. This is not an option for many victims! An individual saying they are a victim should be enough. If somebody is accused of something as horrific as sexual harassment, their consequences should be immediate. Many high schoolers have been victims and of sexual harassment, and in-school abusers across Washington state (and many other states) continue to have the privilege to live normal lives. They are about to participate on various sports teams, participate in social events, attend major schools, get scholarships, and walk around THE SAME HALLS as their victims. There needs to be consequences. Sexual Harassment is against the law, and it is sickening that the law doesn’t apply in most schools as well. We need change. We need to reform policies around sexual harassment and implement a zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment. This may not stop it all together, but bringing consequences to those who have committed such a disgusting crime could help victims feel like they are being heard, like they are valid. I believe school students should be held accountable for such actions, and I believe that victims deserve to feel safe in Washington State Schools. Nobody should have to walk around the same school as their abuser. Nobody should have to worry that a known abuser might be targeting them next. Students with sexual harassment allegations NEED TO HAVE CONSEQUENCES. The law should apply regardless of if it happened in school or on campus, or not. Reinvent policies around sexual harassment, and keep abusers out of Washington Schools. Thank you. Please Sign and Share to show your support to the millions affected by Sexual Harassment and Rape.
