Jay Walton started this petition to Washington & Lee Administration and

When President Dudley formally invited students to return to campus in the fall, he thanked the student body, "…for the positive spirit and mutual support that you have demonstrated throughout this crisis, which has helped us all adapt to such radically different and rapidly evolving circumstances. These qualities will continue to serve us well as we embark together on this most unusual school year." To say this school year has been "unusual" would be an understatement. Few could have predicted the mental toll online learning would take on the W&L student body. Recognizing the challenge of online learning, schools such as Georgetown, UVA, and UNC have offered their students the option to switch to a credit/no credit system. As the number of our peer institutions who recognize the challenges of online learning continues to grow, we are disappointed at the administration's lack of substantive action. To demonstrate their support for students' mental health, we encourage the university to offer the option of credit/no credit for the Fall 2020 semester.

The limitations of online learning have made themselves apparent to everyone at W&L this semester. It is unfair to students attempting to navigate the logistical challenges of online learning to subject them to the same grading system that has existed in years past. It has been significantly more difficult for students to access many resources that aid in their success. From office hours to the library, many students find themselves unable to get the help they have had access to in the past. Professors, some of whom are navigating online learning for the first time, are being asked to prioritize grading over supporting their students. Offering a Credit/No Credit system will better allow both students and professors to focus on what actually matters, ensuring students understand their courses' material and preparing them for longterm success.

Credit/No Credit grading is not a new concept. Students were offered the option in the winter and spring terms this past year. While unprecedented, the administration acted with the best interests of the students at heart. Similarly, this term, students must be provided with options to best meet their academic needs. As the W&L Covid-19 committee acknowledged in their October 7th update, "…we know this has not been an easy term thus far,…We appreciate all that you're doing and continue to do to make this unusual semester a success!" We, the students of W&L, implore the administration to revise the grading policies to offer a Credit/No Credit option in the interest of students' mental well-being and continued success.
