The five-year bar states that adult lawful permanent residents (LPR) who entered the U.S. after 8/22/1996 must be in LPR status for five years before they become eligible for Medicaid, which is called Washington Apple Health Adult coverage in Washington. This five-year federal waiting period does not apply to Washington Apple Health for Pregnant or the Alien Emergency Medical program. However, for instance, if my family are new immigrants for less than 5 years, your parents haven’t found a job due to a language barrier and I’m still at school. Unfortunately, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo the surgery. The cost for treatment was more than your current saving account after your current insurance paid partially. If your mom could have Medicaid, everything would be different. Therefore, my petition is that the lawful permanent residents are allowed to get the Washington Apple Health Adult coverage regarding how many years they’ve come to the U.S.
