Erik Allard started this petition to Washington Employment Security Department

I'm a self-employed painter/handyman contractor. Like most other non-essential workers I applied for state unemployment benefits, also expecting to receive the $600 per week from the federal government per the CARES Act. I haven't seen a dime yet. The unprecedented amount of claims has understandably bogged down the system and ESD has done a lot to meet the high demand. But many people, including self-employed workers and independent contractors have been waiting up to seven weeks to get paid without any success.

One of the main reasons thousands of people are not getting paid is because their claims are stuck in adjudication. Washington State Employment Security Commissioner Suzi LeVine addressed the topic of adjudication on April 29th and said it was necessary to make sure people are qualified for benefits. If there is any discrepancy between their info and their employer's info,  their claim goes into adjudication.

In normal circumstances adjudication is necessary to prevent fraud. However, during this crisis, the need for unemployed workers to put food on the table supercedes the need for a government institution to save money. Most people are just trying to claim the money that was promised them by the state and federal government. Please temporarily suspend the adjudication process and approve all claims. After the crisis is over and people go back to work, then the adjudicators can go through the claims and properly address any fraudulent or unqualified ones. It's the right thing to do.
