Greenhouse gas emissions are dangerously high, and the atmosphere is warming at an unprecedented rate. This warming will only worsen if we continue our fossil fuel dependence. Renewable energy resources are increasing in popularity, but initial costs of green energy tend to be far more expensive than those of fossil fuels. To incentivize renewable energy and make the short-term price of fossil fuels reflect the costs of its long-term climatic consequences, a tax should be placed on fossil fuel extraction, an initiative called “carbon pricing." Currently, in the US House of Representatives, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend act (H. R. 763) proposes to do just this.  To ensure bipartisan support, this bill will tax carbon and return the money from this tax to private households, stimulating the economy. Furthermore, various liberal arts schools on the east coast have endorsed carbon pricing through the “Put a Price on It” campaign. These schools include: Swarthmore College, Dickinson College, Franklin and Marshall, Muhlenburg College, and many more. Washington College is lagging behind these schools in failing to endorse carbon pricing. By schools and institutions publicly showing their support for carbon pricing, legislation like H.R. 763 is more likely to pass. Washington college has taken many innovative steps towards decreasing fossil fuel dependency on campus, including installation of electric vehicle chargers, purchasing of solar energy credits, energy reduction campaigns, and bike share programing. Endorsing H.R. 763 and signing onto the “Put a Price on It” campaign are the next logical steps in supporting Washington College’s efforts to reduce fossil fuel dependence. Increasing awareness of carbon pricing could then pave the way for future carbon pricing initiatives on campus. Click here for more information about the Put a Price on It campaign.

The Student Environmental Alliance at Washington College has been working hard to reduce fossil fuel dependence on campus. For example, at our annual “Sweater day” event, we hand out hot chocolate, encouraging students to turn down their thermostats in the winter to save energy. Members of the Student Environmental Alliance in 2016 attended a Citizens Climate Lobby Regional Conference and were introduced to the “Put a Price on It” campaign. It has since then been a long-standing goal of the Student Environmental Alliance to get Washington College on the list of schools endorsing climate pricing, and this initiative is of increasing importance with the introduction of H.R. 763. With increasing support from campus allies, we hope 2019 will be the year that college president Kurt Landgraf publicly express Washington College's support for carbon pricing through endorsement of H.R. 763 and the "Put a Price on It" campaign.
