Save the Eagle Rec

Many of us use the rec for exercise, dog walking, ball games, strolling, picnics, or just to relax.  It is the only green space we have in 'Old Town' and is greatly valued by our community.

Aerial photos show it is relatively small in size, compared with other parks and gardens to the north, and any reduction in its area would be deeply felt by the surrounding residents.

No-one objects to the principle of building of social or affordable housing, but in this built up area (the park is framed by houses, the Rangemaster Factory, and the Sydnenham industrial estate) this green space is crucial to the quality of life of many residents.

Our reasons are as follows:

1. The Rec is a community amenity fundamental to the health and wellbeing of local people. It is the only available green space in a relatively cramped and crowded residential area.

2. Contrary to rumour, the Rec is well used for a wide variety of sporting and social activities.

Official crime statistics show that it is no less safe than similar green spaces, and considerably safer than many local streets.

3. We do not find the Rec intimidating or unsafe and believe that only a small minority of local people hold this outmoded fear.
