brian payne started this petition to Warren Town Council Keri Cronin, John Hanley, Steve Calenda, Brandt Heckert, Joseph DePasquale

Last October our town installed a harsh, bright blue, LED streetlight right outside our door. As i look out my window at night, it looks like daylight on the street corner and on my front porch. The shadows cast on the ground are denser than during a noon day sun and shadows of the power lines are giant dark lines bobbing up and down on the neighbor's houses. Most importantly, the blinding blue bulbs are directly outside our son's window, not more than 10 feet away. We need thick blackout curtains to try and cut down on the searchlight effect beaming into his room and messing with his sleep. Thankfully, the brightness of this one streetlight was reduced to 50% soon after I sent a request to Bob Rulli, our town planner. (Tho it still very bright and could use a cover) This petition is in hopes of addressing the same issue throughout the town of Warren.

It seems as though this was an engineering solution that did not take into account any human factors of everyday life. I recognize and commend the intention to reduce energy and the benefits this has not only financially but also environmentally. However, many studies have researched the color and brightness effects of LED streetlights on light pollution and how they contribute to loss of night sky. I have also done some work as a designer on the disruptive effects of the makeup of artificial light on our circadian rhythms, messing with our sleep patterns as well as our internal systems. In addition, the color and brightness has got to have a negative effect on wildlife, nocturnal and otherwise. I cannot understand exactly how these modifications could help with safety and traffic, since I am blinded by them while driving and my headlights are sufficient on event the darkest mountain roads.

I might be more acutely affected by aesthetics than others, but the unnatural light cast on our streets and homes is plain ugly and disturbing. As the sun sets earlier, this lights are on earlier and more often. Walking around at night it feels like I am not a small friendly town, but in a parking lot or laboratory. The glaring lights prevent me from looking up or seeing what is up ahead in the solid, inky blackness created by the stark contrast of light and dark. I question how safe these lights make the street where normally my eyes can adjust to the evening glow instead of being blinded every 20 yards.

Some solutions to address the problems caused by these lights include reducing the brightness, lowering the emission of blue light, and installing shields to reduce glare, among others. The contractors who were commissioned to install these lights should be brought in to revise these conditions that have been imposed on us. I am hoping that others feel the same way as I do, a year after the lights were installed, and that neighbors can band together to ask town council to address and fix the effects of these intrusive lights throughout our town.
