Why this petition matters

Started by Angela Smith

Cheryl Killion is currently incarcerated at Denver Women’s Correctional Facility. Her inmate (DOC) number is 155692. In 1993, Ms. Killion was a victim of domestic violence and was on prescription anti-depressants. Killion’s 3-year old daughter found and took some of the anti-depressants without Killion’s knowledge or consent and was hospitalized due to an adverse reaction. Killion was charged with child endangerment due to negligence. Killion received 5-years probation for the charges at that time.

Following the sentence of probation, Killion was attacked by her ex-boyfriend, raped, and stabbed. He also burned her house down. She took her child and ran to the Northwest to get help from a family friend that assisted her in legally changing her name and starting a new life out of harm’s way. She feared for the safety of herself and her child. So, she ran. In running from the clear and present danger presented by her ex-boyfriend, she had violated the terms of her probation. So, a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Decades later, Killion was arrested in Oregon and transported back to Colorado for violating her probation. Her daughter, now an adult and serving in the U.S. military and in good health is fine. But, based on a mistake from many years ago, Killion is now locked up in the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility.

In addition, Cheryl Killion has myasthenia gravis. For more information on this disease, see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001731/. For many years, Killion has been in and out of the hospital due to respiratory failure. She requires proper medical care and treatment. She is not getting this at this time. She has gone through all the proper channels to request medical parole and proper medical care. In the meantime, heat and other adverse prison conditions are aggravating her condition. She has requested a fan to help with the heat and is still waiting on approval.

We, the American People, ask that you provide Ms. Killion proper medical care and alleviate some of the adverse conditions aggravating her health condition by providing her with a fan. We also ask that you grant her clemency, or in the least, medical parole so she can get the care she needs.

Ms. Killion is a survivor of domestic abuse and institutional abuse. She spent much of her youth in Bethesda Home for Girls in Mississippi. This program was notoriously abusive and associated with the Bethel Boys Academy, also now closed. She deserves a chance at life free from institutionalized abuse and with those who love and care for her. Please, give her the medical care she needs and make sure she survives to spend time with those she loves and whom love her again.
