Gabriela Primrose started this petition to Wandsworth Council

Wandsworth council is proposing to replace the current FREE stay and play and other FREE services with a FEE PAYING stay and play or a PRIVATE nursery.

Where childrens' centres work well they have the ability to transform the lives of families for the better and improve outcomes for the future - particularly by supporting the earliest years of a child's life where the opportunities to enhance their development are greatest.

The Garratt Park (Henry Prince) Childrens' Centre has helped hundreds of local families.  From advice from specialists who regularly visit the centre (such as child psychologists, health visitors, sleep and nutrition experts) to simply helping parents through what can be a very lonely time.  The centre provides a vital support network of both professionals and other parents and carers that a lot of families may not otherwise have access to. Waiting until a family is "troubled" means we are already acting too late as this definition requires that children are already missing school.

The proposal is simply intended to cut costs at the expense of providing essential services to those who need them most.  The alternative centres mentioned in the consultation are already oversubscribed, as well as being much further away.

Therefore we the undersigned request that Wandsworth council:

  1. Return to their original recommendation (as set out in committee paper 15-457 and approved by the Committee and full council) that the de-designation of Garratt Park Children’s centre is carried out by bringing services under shared management of another children’s centre. This will meet the intended objectives of reducing costs whilst retaining universal, free provision to local families, including those identified as in priority need.
  2. This should include keeping the twice weekly free stay and play service in the Henry Prince estate open.
