Change The MHS Dress Code
Change The MHS Dress Code
I am petitioning against Mcadory High School’s dress code. It violates a student’s right to equal opportunities during the school day. A woman’s body is not an object nor distraction. Clothing does not define how successful students preform in the classroom. Teachers and other administrators have addressed the dress code by referring to it as “practice for the real world”. This common statement is demonstrably false, as most women break these dress code guidelines when at work, in public, at church, with family, and at school. There aren’t negative repercussions to wearing clothing in the real world, so why are there at school? Plenty of schools allow basic clothing items such as ripped jeans above the knee, athletic shorts, skirts shorter than 4 inches above the knee, tank tops, crop tops, spaghetti strap tops, biker shorts, bandannas, hair picks, hats, caps, diverse jewelry, etc. The dress codes guidelines are sexist, racist, and classist. They specifically target common women’s clothing, items or clothing often used and worn by students of color, and often ignore the fact that some students may not financially be able to adhere to dress code. Every student should have the right to express themselves with their clothing, without fear of punishment. The school board needs to modify the dress code to accommodate everyone.
