On Monday January 14th Disney released the movie line up for 2013-2015 and it appears that they have canceled The Little Mermaid 3D due to the fact that "Finding Nemo" and "Monsters Inc" flopped. But why did those movies flop? Probably because they just came out 12 years ago. That is not enough time for a movie to become a celebrated "classic" and honor it with a return to theaters. If you take a look, The Lion King did extremely well in the box office, Beauty and the Beast did fairly well, and so would The Little Mermaid.
Why would The Little Mermaid do well? It's a legend and has been around for 24 years and since has only been released one other time in 2D in 1998. That is a 15 year gap. Ariel 24 years later is still one of the most popular princesses. She even got her own ride at 2 parks in 2011 and 2012; Can we say obvious success? Ariel toys are always sold out at the Disney store. I don't know how many times I've tried to pick up Ariel plush toys at the Disney Store and they were sold out.
As of right now, Pixar doesn't have a strong enough fan base, Everyone wants to take their families to see the Disney Classics.
Disney should follow through with their plans, simply to please the millions of Ariel fans. The process only costs a couple millions and they are nearly guaranteed to make that back and some additional profit as well. Disney is all about the magic, so please share the magical experience with today's generation as well by re-releasing The Little Mermaid.
