According to Government restriction for Tier 3 areas, libraries can remain open however,  Walsall Council have made the decision to keep libraries in the borough closed and have decided to scrap the ‘Ring and Read’ service which had been used by many residents. We pay council tax for this service but we still do not get a say whether our libraries re open, the money being saved during the closure needs to be reinvested in the service, not lining the pockets of councillors.

Walsall is the only borough in the region to not have a library service during these restrictions despite having less cases than other areas such as Birmingham.

Children and young people across the borough who don’t have access to computers, don’t have a quiet place to work, don’t have internet access rely on the library to do homework but are being deprived of this.

The council leader has said “Im a firm believer that if we haven’t used something for the past four or five months, do we really need it?”. We haven’t used shops or schools for months during the first lockdown, is he trying to say we don’t need them. Pathetic logic.

The library service needs to re open with COVID safety measures implemented, it is an essential service that many of our most vulnerable residents use and rely on, councillors may have never even used the service but they need to understand it is of vital importance to the residents of Walsall.
