Petition: A34 Birmingham Road, Walsall

We the undersigned support Walsall Council to install average speed Cameras on the A34 Birmingham Road and open two lane near the Bell public house in both directions. We recognise the need for Birmingham Road A34 safety improvements but current Layout is causing delay to local residents and commuters. The layout was designed to make our roads safer -but it has just created congestion chaos! This is a main arterial route used by all residents in the Borough, the new highway scheme has not worked and should never have been implemented.

Problems: Parkhall Estate - The estate is being used as a rat run by drivers escape to avoid the long queues on the Birmingham Road. The new layout diverts drivers from the main road onto this residential estate threatening highway safety and increases the chances of potential accidents involving school children and local residents. The narrow roads in the estate were not designed for this flow of traffic and can not cope with the extra traffic caused by the traffic measures implemented on the Birmingham Road.

Queues - Drivers are now queuing as far back as the Metro Inn Hotel in the morning adding up to at least 30 minutes to their journeys. Queues in the opposite direction can reach as far as Junction 7 - again causing up to 30 minute delays. Parents, carers and commuters are now finding that they are often late picking up young children from school, meeting caring commitments and arriving to work on time. in effect, tens of thousands of motorists are suffering from long delays and inconvenience caused by bad planning by the highways team, not to mention the knock on effect this is having on families and employers. The roads are no safer - Drivers are becoming agitated and performing aggressive manoeuvres to get ahead. Drivers are ignoring road markings in both directions which could lead to serious accidents. Speeding is simply being moved to other areas of Walsall as drivers attempt to make up time lost in the extended queues.

Ward councillors and Residents urge the council to re-evaluate the layout and re-open the two lane approaches towards the Bell PH and revert to the old road layout that worked perfectly well.

The installation of average speed cameras from county hotel all the way to the dual carriageway would help with road safety and allow the traffic to flow with a safe speed not compromising highway safety.
