"There can be no greater issue than that of conservation in this country." -Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States.  The issue of conservation has come forefront for countries of the world.

On Dec. 2, 2019, a 10-year-old sperm whale washed up on a Scottish beach with 220 pounds of plastic debris in its stomach.  In March, a whale was found dead in the Philippines with 88 pounds of plastic in its stomach.  In April, a whale was found dead in Italy with 48 pounds of plastic in its stomach.  Even more often are dolphins, turtles, and birds found dead with plastic in their stomachs.  It is a perverse travesty that any living thing should die for the sake of plastic shopping bags and disposable dishes and other plastic debris.

In addition to all of this plastic debris killing our wildlife.  We now know that whales (and other marine life) have a tremendous responsibility in maintaining our world's environmental balance through carbon sequestration and phytoplankton production through the effects known as the "whale pump" and the "whale conveyor belt", but the ocean wildlife is being being killed by plastic waste.

It is still possible to reverse the trend of plastic pollution with the following challenge:

1) The Global 1000 decrease use of ALL PLASTIC by 20% by the end of 2020

2) The Global 1000 increase their use of RECYCLED PLASTIC by 20% for their remaining plastic use by the end of 2020

The Global 1000 contributes to the majority of the world's global plastic production and use.  Currently, there are alternatives to plastic available for use in many applications.  For applications that demand plastic, there are currently stacks of shredded plastic stored around the world waiting to be recycled even while new plastic is being produced.

These goals have the potential to reduce the production of plastic as well as reduce the stores of plastic already in existence.  Together, these goals will greatly decrease the plastic that is being released into our environment.  Why 20% by the end of 2020?  This is a feasible goal and it is achievable.  There are ready alternatives for decreasing the use of plastic, and there are tons of recyclable plastic ready to use as we speak.  Why the Global 1000?  This is a global issue.  If the companies of the Global 1000 commit to these goals, none of these worldwide companies can complain about unfair advantages of the other companies.
