On January 31st, a Winston-Salem fertilizer plant caught on fire. The mayor of Winston-Salem announced that everyone within a 1 mile radius should evacuate for 48 hours due to the potential for an ammonium nitrate explosion. Many Wake Forest students live off campus within this danger zone, along with Martin Residence Hall. For this reason alone, classes should be cancelled on February 2nd. In addition, the Wake Forest University campus is located directly within the zone that will endure the most hazardous air and smoke as a result of the fire, which can be potentially hazardous for students and staff. Furthermore, if there were to be an ammonium nitrate explosion, it is recommended that everyone within a 5 mile radius be evacuated, which Wake Forest campus clearly is.
