Oppose “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) Policy in Wake County Schools

We the undersigned oppose the School Board’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy for the following reasons:

1. BYOD prevents school’s compliancy of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) designed to protect students from accessing harmful internet content on the school bus or school campus, because students can easily bypass filtered/protected wifi internet access by using their own cellular data plan to connect to the internet.
2. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a maximum screen limit of 2 hours per day for children K-12. However, BYOD influences online addiction, as it requires students’ devices to be with them 7+ hours on school days. Devices receive constant notifications from apps, social media, and instant messaging, causing students distraction, anxiety and the compulsive need to check their devices throughout the day.
3. BYOD negatively impacts student self-esteem for those who cannot afford to own a device, increases peer pressure to own a device, and negatively impacts social-emotional, physical and mental health outcomes for K-12.
