He shouldn’t be rewarded by having a school name after him for the abuse of Black people.

I am appalled that a petition is even necessary in this case. The School Board Chair and Superintend just issues statements about their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. This is their opportunity to demonstrate that commitment.

Mr. Daniels does not deserve to have his name memorialized on any building, especially a public school!

I grew up in eastern NC and my mom sent my sisters and me to integrate a white school. I know firsthand the impact of segregation and white supremacy. Abolishing these racist memorials is a great first step in moving our country forward.

I worked at the News & Observer and was proud to work for the Daniels family. When I learned about Josephus's problematic history I was glad to help spread that word. When I saw the Daniels family's decision to remove the statue of Josephus from Nash Square I was prouder than ever of my association with a family that has grown and changed with the times. The Daniels name is no longer a shameful one. Just the same, the name of a white supremacist does not belong on a public building. Rename this school for someone without such a staggering stain on their reputation.
