Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC, which is apart of the Wake County Public School system has a lunch period of 35 minutes, and only 30 minutes on days homeroom is in the bell schedule. Due to a variety of circumstances this is not nearly enough time to eat comfortably before the next class. The first five minutes of these lunches, students usually spend getting to where they would like to eat, whether that is is the Cafeteria, courtyard, in their car or somewhere off campus which leaves even less time for students to eat. Students who eat school lunch have to wait in cafeteria lines in order to get food , students who go off campus have to walk to where the car is parked ( Often 5-7 minutes away, often on the "Strip") , or to the restaurant of their choice which is even further and more time consuming. Another 5 minutes is spent walking back to campus or cleaning up in order to head to the next class, leaving a reality of around 30 minutes on regular days and 25 during days with homeroom if you are rushing to get to your destination. This is mentally draining after the first couple of weeks. Not having enough time to eat comfortably is one of the many problems Broughton has yet to fix. As Seniors, we want our class to be able to face the obstacles of this year head on with a break that is long enough for us to keep the stamina we need for the next 180 days, as well as the classes below us to experience longer lunches. Thank you !! Please sign this petition if you agree.
