Petition Closed

This is an online petition respectfully asking the WCPSS Board, Superintendent, and Staff to not change the Davis Drive Elementary start time from 7:45 to 9:15, the Davis Drive Middle School start time from 8:15 to 7:30 and the Green Hope High School start time from 8:05 to 7:25.

It does not work well to have DDE starting at 9:15 with the adjoining DDMS starting at 7:30, a full 1 hour and 45 minutes apart.  If you look at the proposed start times for the elementary and middle schools that share a campus, the lag time between the bell times is much smaller (anywhere from 5 minutes up to a max of 1 hour).   This is a discrepancy unique to the DDE and DDMS shared campus.

If Davis Drive Elementary's start time is changed to 9:15 that would necessitate the school to have a before-school program, which is currently not in place and would be a new financial burden for working families.

Numerous studies show that teenagers need 9 or more hours of sleep every night to nourish their rapidly changing brains. More sleep translates into better moods, higher motivation, fewer fatigue-related complaints, and a decrease in the risk of auto accidents. Below are links to two articles that summarize these studies and their impacts and you are encouraged to read them.

Please take this information into consideration when deciding on bell times for Wake County’s high schools and middle schools. The health and well-being of our teenagers is more important than arbitrary start times that may modestly improve the transportation system. The proposed start time of 7:30 am for Davis Drive Middle School and 7:25 am for Green Hope High (and other middle and high schools that already have similar start times) does NOT give our teenagers the best chance at success in school and may potentially be harming them mentally and physically.

Time is of the essence, as it appears the Board is voting on this matter on March 6th.  Please feel free to send your comments/suggestions to the BOE members:
