Wairoa District Council is illegally dumping waste water into the Wairoa River. This was reported to the Hawkes Bay Regional council and they have demanded that the Wairoa District Council start consultation with Iwi but we think that isnt enough. We the undersign believe the council needs to consult with all its constituents pursuant to Marine and Coastal Area Act 2011. This consultation needs to happen immediately and in a timely manner with total transparency.
Wairoa District Council is pouring wastewater onto river's edge through unauthorised discharge .
Wastewater was being pumped into the Wairoa River estuary by the local council without resource consent until a member of the public alerted authorities.
Since 1999 Wairoa District Council has held a resource consent to discharge the town's wastewater into the lower Wairoa River, through a diffuser about 100metres off shore in the estuary area.
But after storm damage to the diffuser in September last year the council shortened the outfall pipe so the wastewater was pumped directly onto the river's edge.
