Cellular devices are an important tool in a growing electronic world. The infinite applications and uses of Smart Phone Devices allow students to explore and learn even greater than made possible during previous years. A lunch period during the school day is a time for relaxing and socialization among peers. It makes no logical sense to restrict the freedom of students during a time which is meant to be free time. Restricting use of phones in classrooms makes sense because devices can distract students and disrupt the learning environment. This does not apply, however, to the lunch period. There are no tasks that one can be distracted from. After being taken from a student, a parent or guardian must go to the main office in order to retrieve the device. The time it takes to retrieve the phone is better allocated to doing almost anything else. It is an annoyance for parents and the policy should be ended. The paternalistic, totalitarian attitude of the school on this subject matter is pitiful and wrong, and is a pointless limitation of a students freedom. We would like to propose the allowance of electronic devices not issued by the school during the lunch periods, and allowing students to pick up their devices at the end of the day. We feel these are a reasonable extension of the rights of students. If you agree with the claims we have made and would like to see this policy implemented, please sign the petition.
