As parents and community leaders we care deeply about our kids and strongly support school reopening for all grade levels. Too many of us have seen firsthand the impacts continued isolation and distance learning have on our kids and families. It’s time to end this frustration and act now. CDC reports show that schools are not significant spreaders of Covid-19, and in fact, students are safer when they are in schools that are following health guidelines. The VUSD classrooms have been fitted with new ventilation systems, sanitization systems, and social distancing standards in place. They are safe! Studies also highlight distance-learning situations are far more detrimental to the mental and physical health of the student than allowing students to go to school. For those who prefer to remain in remote learning they have that option. This is about the families and kids who do not have options and desperately need them. As the leadership for the Visalia schools, VUSD alone can work to make changes. We are not asking them to defy health orders but as a Board they have the ability and obligation to work with state and local officials and get results. This is a signature moment in time to show leadership. We are asking them how they will choose to respond? As parents we pledge our assistance to make getting backing to school a reality and challenge the VUSD Board and Superintendent to make it happen in the next 30 days.
