The suicide rates in Guyana have increased significantly in the past years."This puts Guyana at the top of the list with 44.2 per 100,000 people, the highest suicide rate in the world."(Kaieteur News). About 700,000 people live in Guyana, this means that every year, about 309 people commit suicide. Why do people commit suicide? Many social problems including peer pressure, for the youth, domestic violence, drug abuse, and teenage pregnancies cause people to take their own lives. I believe that no one should take their own life. For Americans, the suicide rate is about 7 people for every 100,000 people. If you think the suicide rate is bad in America, multiply that by six and you get Guyana's suicide rate. Two thirds of the population of Guyana live in poverty, about 470,000 Guyanese people live in poverty. The poverty line in Guyana is about $2 a day, 35% of the population are below the poverty line. Volda Lawrence is the Minister of Social Protection in Guyana, a problem she informs us about is the lack of organizations to help people with thoughts of suicide, she also says that most people don’t know what to do about people with suicidal thoughts,”Parents and family members making joke off of it and mock their children and family members,” (News Guyana). We need more organizations in Guyana to help these children and adults with thoughts of suicide. No one should kill themselves and we need to stop the social problems in Guyana.
