Maria Stacey started this petition to Vodacom Chief Executive Officer Shameel Joosub and

Lockdown is necessary in South Africa to prevent a health catastrophe from COVID-19.

BUT its effects on the economic status of South Africans is going to be devastating. People who are the most economically vulnerable are already being hit the hardest- casual workers, day-wage workers, domestic workers, people with small and micro enterprises. School and university students are starting a new school term under lockdown, but how are they going to study online without data? Many South Africans are going into lockdown in severely overcrowded conditions. We face the threat of an increase in domestic violence and in mental health problems, as has been seen in other countries.

Access to internet makes a huge difference in how people are able to cope with lockdown. Access to internet means that:

1. People can have access to critical news and information

2. Students can continue to study online, thus minimising disruption of the school year

3. People who can work from home can stay economically active

4. People can connect with their loved ones

5. Children - and all family members - can have access to entertainment to allay the frustration of lockdown.

South African cellphone companies have the power to do something that will alleviate the suffering of South Africans dealing with the COVID-19 lockdown. They have the power to make data free for the period of lockdown. Cellphone companies in other countries, like New Zealand, have already done this.

We therefore urge Vodacom, MTN and Cell-C to give South Africans free data during lockdown in the national interest!
