Every school day in the UK children are removed from their school lunch queue and told they cannot have what their peers are eating and some offered a basic alternative; a sandwich, or salad. Others get nothing. I personally was not aware of this practice of lunch shaming; holding children publicly accountable for unpaid school lunch bills — by refusing them their choice of food, and providing a less desirable alternative.
I am shocked that in our society we are literally treating children like this, for the misgivings of the adults in their lives. Food and children’s access to it is fundamental to their healthy emotional, social and overall wellbeing. It should never be used in this way. If a Foster carer was to do this, they would be deregistered, and depending on the circumstances a move for criminal charges.
I am utterly mortified and angry, that so many children experience this dehumanising and humiliating situation. Shaming them for something we the adults could find better means to address. This situation is likely to get worse as we see a rise in poverty and hardship amongst those not on benefits; those families working to keep and maintain their families. Families on benefits, their children with get free school meals.
Do those who put these policies in place, honestly know how they play out emotionally and socially for the children? I get it might address a kink in the school’s business model but is it truly worth it? It’s inhumane.
Surely there must be other ways to get parents to pay without abusing children.

How do we stop this practice of ‘lunch shaming’?

The solution is simple free school lunches for all.

I started this petition because…
My son was refused his lunch and offerd a basic alternative, when I made a mistake with his booking. He was absolutely mortified. Until this incident I did not know about 'lunch shaming'.
