Roshan Bhatt started this petition to Vit and

The objective of this petition is to suspend classes in VIT until the COVID situation is settled down. VIT made a great decision by rescheduling the academic calendar so that there were no classes from 1st May to 11th of May. This decision was made because of the chaos caused by second wave of corona which is tough to cope up with.

Now it's 8th of may, I'm doing fine with my family. But I think, the scene is not same for all of us. These holidays have been a relief. We could focus on what is important at the moment, like:

  • Spending time with family
  • maintaining healthy lifestyle
  • keeping ourselves motivated
  • being optimistic

The question is: Can't we do this even if the classes resume? The answer is NO! It logically seems possible. 'You can continue the way you did before, what's the difference?', is the most straight forward logic. Here's the difference:

  • The students, faculty or their family members may have been infected by the virus. Which makes it even harder for them to normalize things quickly.
  • The situation is getting worse day by day. Although the classes are online, you can't really focus on what you're doing when people in the neighborhood are dying.
  • There's no urgency of having the classes. The urgency is being safe.
  • These classes take up the whole day. So, there's no time for mental peace.
  • It's same as attending classes when you're sick.

It's foolish to say that the online classes will invite corona but it certainly will invite more stress. Personally, it was good to have a break but there still was stress regarding the DAs. Imagine having classes again!

The reason why VIT would want to continue the classes is to not disturb the academic calendar. One year back, VIT decided upon not having a FAT exam due to the extreme situation. Corona was new and seemed deadly (and it was) at that time but this time it's deadlier. The solution could be:

  • The regular DA deadlines may not be changed (best if the deadline is shifted).
  • The faculty can give instructions on doing the DA's and just provide us with materials.
  • Whenever the situation seems better, the regular classes can resume.
  • FAT can be conducted 2 weeks after the classes are reopened.
  • mini-semesters in summer can be suspended like last year.

Management here needs to understand that the scenario is as critical as the last time and may be even more. There's stress from every corner, the classes just amplify those. We can see the COVID wave hitting people, what we don't see is the psychological pandemic going around.
