With tensions rising around the country the need for understanding one another is urgent. Thematic approaches to teaching history is inclusive on multiple perspective, and depicting events including minorities accurately. Through this method students gain deeper understanding of history, develop critical thinking skills, as well as other skills to help scholars succeed in later pursuits in education. It helps build empathy and understand, and aids societal peace. The chronological standard method of teaching focuses on dates, and cause-and-effect relationships, with doesn't encompass true reflection on, and learning from events of the past. It brings little interest to students, while thematic approach has been proven to be more engaging. Thematic approaches in teaching history have also begun to be adopted by the common core standard which so many schools adhere to. This petition asks Rosemary Smithfield a member on the school board of education with multiple high schools in her trustee here in Vista through this letter, to please become an advocate, and help aid the implementation of thematic approach in high school history classrooms in our district.
