IFAW’s Emergency Relief team is on the scene for Hurricane Ike, and the stories coming back from the field are nothing short of incredible.
Beagles survive amidst broken propane tanks
When 6 beagles were found trapped in a house in an area where propane tanks had broken free and were possibly leaking explosive fuel, IFAW's Emergency Relief Team was called into action. Working with the Calcasieu Parish Animal Rescue Team, they found the beagles clinging to a mattress in murky, gas-polluted water. The team saved the beagles and brought them to a shelter for much-needed first aid. It appears that they will all survive, though one suffered an apparent broken leg.
Would you please help us save more animals like these beagles by making a donation today?
Abandoned Rottie saved just in time
Meanwhile, another IFAW team was responding to reports of a Rottweiler in trouble. His owners had chained him to a fence-post and fled the storm surge. The water level was so high that the Rottie had to stand on his hind legs for hours to keep his head above the water line. IFAW’s Search and Rescue team were able to free him minutes before he would have drowned in the rising tide.
IFAW has three teams in the field, some involved in search and rescue efforts, while others are staffing shelters where the rescued animals are brought. The Rottie is now safe at the Calcasieu Animal Shelter.
Please keep our rescue and shelter efforts going by making a donation today.
Animals in rehab center stay afloat until IFAW arrives
Your donation allows us to rescue not only family pets, but also wild animals like those found in a severely damaged wildlife rehabilitation center. The storm surge flooded the rehab center, and the deer, raccoons, rabbits and other animals had to swim for their lives. All managed to survive until help arrived.
The IFAW and Calcasieu Animal Services team waded into the damaged building to help care for the animals, repair critical equipment, and provide much needed information and advice to help keep the animals healthy.
The IFAW teams are working long hours to ensure that the animals are rescued, and then kept safe and healthy.
Please help us continue to rescue and shelter the animals left in Hurricane Ike's wake.
Our response efforts simply wouldn’t be possible without your support.
Thank you,
Fred O'Regan

p.s. Our shelter team in Austin, Texas is currently taking care of 200 dogs, 60 cats, and 55 other animals. Animals receive round-the-clock care as their owners wait for floodwaters to recede so that they can return home. There is nothing more rewarding for IFAW shelter staff than seeing the reunion of a pet and its owner. Thanks to your donation, we will be able to see many more reunions. All gifts to IFAW represent a contribution to IFAW's entire mission. Donations will be used where they are most needed to help animals.
Worried about Donating online?
I used to be too ... so I made sure our online system is safe, secure, and state-of-the-art. It also eliminates check-processing costs, so more money goes directly to saving animals. But if you prefer to donate by phone or mail, simply click here for address information.

If you have an AOL, Hotmail, MSN or Yahoo email address, this is particularly important as we receive many bounce backs from these email addresses.
