Why this petition matters

Started by Jack McCauley

We want to have our rent prorated if we move back into the house later in the quarter. It doesn’t make sense for us to pay rent if we aren’t living there but want to come back. The rent payment on April 1st only ruins people's chances to come back to the Vision community as this COVID-19 situation could become better in the near future. We want to move back into the house, but due to financial struggles, societal obligations, and government enforcement (social distancing), many of us are staying home for at least part of the quarter. Forcing us into an ultimatum is poor judgement because we will just live at home for free in a safe environment and the V16 community will lose money. What is there to gain from forcing us to choose to move in right away? We feel that there has been no grace with this entire process. Many secular organizations around the country and people who are not christ followers have made concessions to allow people to stay where they are living and not get evicted. It doesn’t make sense for a so-called Christian community to make decisions that aren’t graceful and leave us wondering what the board’s true intentions are. It feels like we as college students are being taken advantage of financially. We feel like we’re being forced into an all or nothing deal. Even if the $500 termination fee was still being upheld, I would have paid it along with others because it would’ve been better to cut our losses rather than pay rent in the complete amount and forfeit the money in the likelihood that we don’t move back.

The bottom line is we love where we live and we love our community. Unfortunately, a return to living in houses so big with a rapid spreading virus doesn’t make it reasonable to move in right away. With signs of digression of the virus in Washington State, it would be likely that most of us who aren’t living in the house currently would end up returning. However, that decision can’t be made right now as nobody knows what the future holds in terms of our safety and well-being.

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16.

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34-35.

“fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:2-4‬ ‭
