Eóin Ó Cuinneagáin started this petition to VIS Växjö International Students and

This week 25 Palestinians have been killed and 200 wounded from a huge number of rockets that have rained down on the Gaza Strip from Israeli war-planes and missile artillery. Among the dead are children and babies sleeping at night with their mothers. Since 2012, 77 percent of people killed in Gaza are civilians. In 2018  Israeli forces killed at least 214 Palestinians and wounded more than 18,000. For more than one year, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have protested along the fence with Israel demanding their right to return to the homes and land their families were expelled from 70 years ago.

71 years ago in 1948, Israeli forces ethnically cleansed 750,000+ Palestinians from their homes. But the Nakba, the catastrophe, has never ended. Israel has evicted thousands of people from their homes as part of a campaign to push Palestinians out of their land.

I have met many Palestinian people in Växjö, many of whom are students whose families were displaced from their homeland in Palestine, all of whose families have experienced violence and murder from the Israeli settler-colonial state. They will view the staging of Eurovision on their homeland as a very painful experience, especially if their friends validate and affirm this colonial project as their people are murdered, harassed and denied right of mobility, right to education and right to clean drinking water in an apartheid situation.

I would ask you to support this petition out of respect for human dignity and the refugees who have had to flee from Palestine and anywhere else where imperial wars are waged and innocent people are murdered and displaced. If you support the right of free movement and the right of people to live in their homeland, please consider signing this petition and request to both VIS and Stenladen to boycott this event.

I would ask VIS and Stenladen to cancel the event so as to act in solidarity with their fellow Palestinian colleagues and friends, and to oppose the apartheid situation in Palestine.

Sincerely,

Eóin Ó Cuinneagáin, PhD student, Linnaeus University
