Sophie Schneider started this petition to Virginia State Senate

In 2020’s Virginia Senate session, two bills imposing a plastic bag tax will be offered. Senate Bill No. 11, which is Senator Adam P. Ebbin’s, D-Alexandria bill, would allow any locality to enforce a five cent tax for each plastic or paper disposable bag provided to the consumer. One cent would be retained for the retailer while the remaining four would go to the locality.

Senator J. Chapman Petersen, D-Fairfax City, is proposing Senate Bill No. 26, which would impose a five cent tax on every plastic bag provided to a consumer in any locality fully within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. One cent would go to the retailer while the remaining four would go towards the state’s Chesapeake Bay restoration commitments.

The chance that these bills will pass is stronger then ever before because of the fact that on November 5th, 2019, the Virginia Senate obtained a Democratic majority for the first time in many years. I have hope that this will be the year that Virginia will put the environment first and cut down on plastic. Join me to show our support in the passing of this bill!

Thank you-

Sophie Schneider
