Reform VA ABC Law Enforcement Powers

On March 18, 2015, University of Virginia Student Martese Johnson was injured and arrested by Virginia ABC officers outside a bar even though he did not have a fake ID. Two years earlier, another University of Virginia student Elizabeth Daly was startled and arrested after buying sparkling water. These incidents raise serious questions about why ABC has law enforcement powers.
Therefore, Governor McAuliffe should work with the Virginia State Senate and Virginia House of Delegates to remove ABC's law enforcement powers. At the very least, ABC officers should no longer have power to target individuals on the street and should focus on enforcement against businesses. This is a bipartisan issue that all Virginians can get behind and we urge our elected officials to take action.
