My name is Joseph Kelly, I live in Portsmouth Va where the crime is really high. 21years ago I was in very toxic and bad relationship to where I was advised to plea Guilty to a Domestic Violence Charge. At that time my attorney said it was a misdemeanor and would be off my record in 3yrs. So taking the advice I did . Forward in 2020 , I went to Superior Pawn Shop in Virginia Beach to purchase a handgun, thinking all is ok, I’m buying a New Home in a high crime area, just wanted protection for my home and family, to only find out Virginia in 2014 changed the law. Any conviction involving Domestic Violence results in loosing your rights to own a firearm. I was charged with a Felony for falsifying documents, and arrested for it.

After finding this out I come to find out there’s hundreds if not thousands of Citizens of the state of Virginia this has happened to, and it’s like a scam , cause the Pawn Shop charge you a fee for re shelving fee for something you never left the store with, had to hire a attorney which is not cheap at all ,and also be charged with a Felony.

I know this law was put in place to protect but the State Of Virginia is robbing it citizens with this law.

How long you want to hold people down.So I’m petition the Higher Courts to look at this Law and change it.

We first had to stop treating everything like it’s a crime and go to the root cause of what Domestic Violence really is , it’s a mental illness and the Government don’t want to admit to there faults in this act.
