Increase Racial Diversity in Virginia's Justice System #DiversityInJusticeVA

#DiversityInJusticeVA We must act now to address the glaring, longstanding, and inexcusable lack of racial diversity amongst sitting Judges, Prosecutors, and Public Defenders in Virginia's Justice System. We urge all Virginia Legislators to take immediate steps to appoint more racially diverse Judges.  We also urge all Commonwealth's Attorneys and Public Defenders to take immediate steps to hire and retain more racially diverse Prosecutors and Defenders. Currently, in Northern Virginia where more than 33% of all residents are racially diverse, only 7 out of 74 judges (10%) are African-American, Hispanic, or Asian-American. If the General Assembly continues to fail to appoint racially diverse judicial candidates, we project that, within two years, only 4 out of 74 of those judges (5%) will be minority. The racial diversity among virtually all of Northern Virginia's Commonwealth's Attorney's and Public Defender's Offices is similarly bleak. The public's confidence in the fairness and impartiality of the Virginia Justice System is undermined when the system bears so little resemblance to the community it serves.
