Paul Meadors started this petition to Virginia Department of Education and

As this school year winds down to a bizarre and tumultuous end, the reality of what the end of this school year was supposed to look like has drastically changed. Many events have been canceled, traditions postponed, and as members of the Class of 2020, the closure we were guaranteed since childhood has been revoked. This is not to say we are not a socially responsible group, as we are compliant with government guidelines for disease prevention.

To be frank, we should not have to continue with a number of things because of the redundancy present in our lives, and ask that the Virginia Dept. of Education help us transition into the next period of our lives with increased ease, as the constructs put into place for that purpose have been removed.

First, we ask that we no longer have exams. We should not have the end of year exams, as the fairness of testing cannot be guaranteed.  This means that if exams are going to be administered it is going to prevent fairness and equity across the state.

Second, seniors for this year should not have to continue coursework. The courses we are currently enrolled in are going to have very little impact on our future, and students preparing for AP exams have the opportunity to prepare for them on their own through resources provided by the college board for the adjusted exams. If we are going into collegiate environments, then the classes we are taking right now will have very little to do with our preparation, as we were accepted already. Moreover, we are not preparing for courses in sequences such as in the Virginia Standards of Education.

Finally, we should be awarded pass/fail credit for the final semester. This will allow equity in light of the given circumstances. We are being measured and compared to previous classes of graduates, and as we are in these unprecedented and unforeseen circumstances which prevent us from being able to effectively participate in academia as expected, it is unfair for us to be graded in a similar fashion. Furthermore, this grading method should apply to the entire second semester, as this is the period that was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Both the third and fourth quarters have and will be impacted, not just the fourth quarter or vice versa.

Our requests are simple, feasible, and fair given the climate. We are simply putting forth requests which will allow us the ability to best transition into the next phase of our lives with the least, and which will allow us our Virginia Constitutional right to a equitable and high-quality education. Thank you.
