Josie Hoffman started this petition to Virginia Beach City Public School Board and

Recently, it has come to my attention that the Princess Anne Middle School chorus department will be ending after this school year. This is unacceptable. The main cause for this is a low number of students who signed up to take classes as a result of the pandemic. This is unfair to the students who are already in the program and for students who are interested in joining. Not to mention, it is unfair to the chorus teacher Mrs. Anderson who has worked so incredibly hard for the past three years. Mrs. Anderson not only worked as director and teacher of the chorus department, but as director of Princess Anne's annual musical. Mrs. Anderson acted as the first introduction into the fine arts for these middle school students.

This cancellation will also have cascading effects to other chorus and fine arts departments in the VBCPS, as Princess Anne Middle funnels into the majority of other high schools in the city. Without exposing middle schoolers to chorus and the fine arts, these students won’t join fine arts departments in high schools and these departments might suffer the same fate. It is also widely known that kids who participate in the fine arts have higher grades and perform better in school.

The fine arts, specifically chorus, is very important to education. Being in chorus teaches students to find confidence in themselves, music notation and theory, as well as teaching students how to work in a group setting and overcoming challenges as a team. The lessons learned in chorus are some of the most valuable that students can possibly learn. For example, students learn how to work and perform on stage in front of an audience, which in one way or another, they will be doing their entire lives in their educational and professional career.

Being in chorus means you are part of a family and a support system that will be there for you no matter what and who accepts anyone and everyone. For some students, this is the only support system that they have and the only place where they truly feel accepted. It is unfair to take this away for so many students.

It is important to note that the pandemic has negatively impacted much of our education system and the normal process of things, but it is even more important to note that the pandemic will end at some point. This is not the “new normal” and the choices that we make during this time will affect the years to come.

Please sign this petition to tell Princess Anne Middle's Principal, Dr. Sandra Brown, that she is making a mistake by ending the Princess Anne Middle School Chorus Department.
