The Gaddi community, living primarily on either sides of the Dhauladhar mountain range in Himachal Pradesh, is among the most enigmatic anthropological groups inhabiting the Indian subcontinent. There is still lack of consensus even among the academicians regarding their origin, history, and even social life. Researchers have often described Gaddis as a clan of nomads, caste, a tribe of transhumance people, and even a distinct nationality. It's in fact a great irony that Gaddis have lived and supplemented the greater mountain culture of the region for centuries, and yet maintained a very distinct identity for themselves.
Recently, a shameful statement was made by the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh, which had downgraded the community and hurt its sentiments.
In dissent, the Gaddi community organised a peaceful protest and showed black flags to the CM's convoy and shouted slogans.
This then resulted in a lathicharge on the unarmed protestors. Compromising of retired Indian Army Captains, nine people were severely injured in the lathicharge and some others escaped with bruises.
The brutality shown by the police department was inhumane, the Superintendent of Police Kangra, refused acknowledging any such event despite the video evidence that was available.
This is our cry for justice that has we have been deprived and denied. A lot of blood has flown and an entire community put down.
