Vinnies calls on both sides of federal government to recommit to halve homelessness by 2020 targets

Australia is a wealthy country often referred to as the “lucky country". Yet in 2013 more than 100,000 Australians are experiencing homelessness, with many more living in extreme poverty and at risk of homelessness.
After a few weeks campaigning, we are happy to share that the Gillard government has reaffirmed their commitment to the 2020 targets. We need the Coalition to also commit to the 2008 The Road Home White Paper targets. These targets have enjoyed bipartisan support at a State and Territory level and despite changes in government, continue to drive policy reform. It would be a huge step backward for government to walk away from these targets.
The face of homelessness is changing. Over 40% of people experiencing homelessness are women; more than 17,000 are children under the age of 12 and a further 10,900 are aged between 12 to 18.
Research shows that children and young people who experience homelessness are more likely to be trapped in that cycle as adults. We build massive walls around these children and young people. How can we then condemn them for allegedly lacking the “aspiration” to scale these walls? By blaming people for their own homelessness we create more homelessness.
Vinnies calls on both sides of politics to recommit to halving homelessness by 2020. Please sign this petition to demonstrate that Australians do care that so many people in this country are marginalised and experiencing homelessness.
