Inspired by a post I saw about why Boston University needs free laundry, I quickly realized the same needs to be said for Villanova University, where I attend school. Currently, it costs $1.50 for one wash cycle and $1.50 for one dry cycle, bringing the total cost for a load of laundry to $3. Now, most of may think that $3 per week on laundry isn't too bad and that it's manageable. It adds up over time. Over this past semester, if a student did laundry once per week and used 1 wash cycle and 1 dry cycle, they would have spent roughly $45 just on laundry. $45 may appear negligible compared with the cost for tuition, room & board, books, and student fees but it does have an impact. Over 4 years, this would be $360 spent just on laundry when instead it could be put towards school and personal supplies.

This negatively impacts students from less affluent backgrounds may have packed fewer clothes, sheets, etc to begin with so that translates to a more frequent need for washing. As a result, these students pay more for laundry than affluent peers. If they needed more than one dry cycle, this would add on to the cost of laundry. These students may already stress about finances and the fact the pay more for laundry than their affluent peers does not, in any way, make the problem better. Also, these students would have less money in their budget to spend on school and personal supplies (which they may also need more of).

Other universities like Columbia University provide free laundry to their students. If Villanova truly wants to improve equity, providing free laundry would be a step towards this as I stated in the second paragraph - this would ensure that students do not need to stress about paying for laundry and can instead put that money towards things like personal products, school supplies, transportation expenses, etc. Thank you for your time to help improve equity at Villanova University.
