Alice Ke started this petition to Villanova University Community

Co-creator Jessica Laino and I, as well as a handful of other students will be taking this petition into a meeting with a university official to show that we have support from the Villanova Community.

On March 3rd, 2021 at 9:19 am, the Villanova community was informed of several reports of sexual assault from four resident female students by the same known male student in University residence halls. These reports were made on March 1st, 2021 and were explained as such: "Complaints ranged from non-consensual sexual touching to non-consensual sexual intercourse." The male perpetrator is said to be "no longer on campus". Not only did the University fail to clarify whether disciplinary action has been taken, but also failed to share these reports with the community upon their initial submission.

The University's choice of words in describing these horrific events is insensitive, disappointing, physically harmful, emotionally damaging, and dangerous. This language directly perpetuates a culture of victim-blaming and does not hold perpetrators accountable.

On March 3rd, 2021 at 9:19 am, the Villanova community was also informed of a separate report made by the Bryn Mawr Hospital Emergency Department to Villanova Public Safety regarding another female student. Despite the fact that “the male [perpetrator] has not been identified to us”, this incident is said to have “occurred on campus between February 26 and February 28, 2021”. This report was made on February 28, 2021 but was not shared with the student body until four days later.

The University claims to “treat[s] each person with dignity and respect” and take “prompt responsive action to end any reported sexual misconduct, prevent its recurrence, and address its effects.” These particular incidents, as well as those of the past, have reflected that the University fails to uphold its verbal and written commitments, failing to ensure a safe, secure campus for everyone. As a result of this negligence, additional students are put in harm’s way.

We, as a community, need to demand further action from the University. The Villanova community deserves better.
