We as a rural community need to change the Spencerport village policy and allow the ownership of backyard chickens as long as certain safety regulations are followed. 

     We have been raising backyard chickens in the village of Spencerport since 2017. They have been a great addition to our community and we love watching the enjoyment they bring to neighborhood kids as they walk by. 

    Recently there was a complaint given to a village trustee stating there was ‘concerns’ for our chickens. If anyone has seen our chickens they would know that they are very well taken care of, are healthy and very friendly. I found the code enforcement officer Rich McQuilkin taking pictures of my backyard and then ultimately telling me the chickens needed to go. 

  The village trustees are openly against raising chickens within the village limits and are not willing to negotiate. Many other Spencerport residents have contacted the village in attempt to obtain a permit which time and time again have been denied. 
 
   Other towns and villages in our community allow the ownership of backyard chickens, Penfield being the most recent (September 2020).

There are many benefits to raising a small flock of chickens such as:

  -Pest control (mosquitos, flees and ticks that can carry dangerous diseases)

  -Personal egg consumption. Farm fresh organic eggs from your backyard flock are not only free but a lot more nutrient and flavorful!

  -Educational. With the majority of families spending more time at home and children schooling from home backyard chickens are a great way to teach responsibility to children.
