Marilyne TOVAR started this petition to Village of Masset and

On June 24th my partner and I went to the Village of Masset Council meeting and made a few proposals. Overall, we were recommended to make petitions so as to show support for our proposals as well as follow up via email. For these reasons, we have created a few petitions so as to move things forward. Haaw'aa!

WHEREAS on the “History” page of the Masset municipality website, there is some wording such as paragraph two which states that Haida Gwaii was “discovered”; and that the “Old Massett IR” page highlights shared water and sewerage treatment facilities

(http://massetbc.com/about-us/history/ and http://massetbc.com/visitors/old-massett/

;

WHEREAS the Doctrine of Discovery (which held that when European nations “discovered” non-European lands, they gained special rights over that land, even if other peoples lived on that land) which appears to be referenced in paragraph two of Masset’s history page is now seen as European imperialism contradictory to the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Truth and Reconciliation call-to-action number 45 and 48

;

WHEREAS Masset and Old Massett residents have a long history of shared collaboration, friendship and families;

Be it RESOLVED that the Masset “History“ page be re-written so that the allusion to the Discovery Doctrine be removed and in good gesture be offered for review by the Council of the Haida Nation and/or Old Masset Village Council and/or Haida citizens; and

Be it RESOLVED that the “Old Massett IR” page be re-written to highlight the collaborative relationships between the Old Massett Village Council and the Village of Masset and in good gesture be reviewed by the Old Massett Village Council.

*Please sign your full name and residential address so that it be valid - if you do not want to have it be revealed publicly, you can direct message it to me please and haaw'aa*

As per the BC Community Charter for municipalities (http://www.bclaws.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/03026_04 there is no need to collect signatures but just full name and residential address of each petitioner as per this excerpt below:

“Petitions to council 82   (1) A petition to a council is deemed to be presented to council when it is filed with the corporate officer. (2) A petition to a council must include the full name and residential address of each petitioner.”
