Steven Martinez started this petition to Village of Lynbrook and

This petition requests that Village of Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach make it an immediate priority to take appropriate measures to remove Robert Barra's name from Lynbrook's parks and the Basketball courts that were dedicated in his honor.

Mr. Barra has a well-documented history of opposing equality and social justice as well as making divisive, bigoted, hatefully-charged statements based on his own personal prejudices. He is not a figure that future generations of our community should look up to and be reminded of every time they pursue recreation in our parks.

Mr. Barra is the former Assemblyman of the 14th, now 21st, Assembly District of the State of New York which includes the areas of Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Malverne, and Baldwin.

During his time in Albany, Mr. Barra was recognized as an "arch-supporter" for the ban on gay marriage and publicly compared LGBT relationships to acts of beastiality.

"We don't let polygamy happen .. We don't let people marry animals. Where do you draw the line at for something like that?" - 2006.

Following his time as Assemblyman, Mr. Barra was forced out of his position as Clerk of the Village of Valley Stream for spewing venomous attacks on women protesting for reproductive rights in Washington D.C., suggesting that Pro-Choice demonstrators at the Women's March “probably should have been aborted.” - 2017.

It is clear that this is not someone who should be memorialized in a community that prides itself on acceptance, tolerance, equality, and personal liberty.

Mayor Alan Beach and the Village of Lynbrook must take immediate action to protect the integrity of our community. Thank you for your support in this pursuit.
